CHICAGO — Police are asking Chicago residents to fill out surveys and join focus groups that will help the department create and change its policies.
Police are asking for input on a variety of policies, including how officers respond to hate crimes, prohibition of sexual misconduct and how officers interact with youth, according to a police news release.
People have until Oct. 15 to fill out the online surveys.

The department is also creating community focus groups that will focus on the same policies. People interested in joining the groups can sign up online.
Participants will be selected at random, and not everyone will be able to get a spot in the focus groups. The department will make an effort to to have the groups reflect the diversity of Chicago’s communities, according to police.
The groups will meet online.
“Policing fairly and without bias is vital to fostering positive relationships between CPD and the communities we serve,” Deputy Supt. Barbara West said in a news release.
The effort to include community input on the department’s policies comes after a summer of protests over police brutality and calls for the Chicago Police Department to be reformed and defunded.
