Some Tuscaloosa City Schools Parents Want In-Person Learning ASAP - wvua23.com

Back in July, Tuscaloosa City Schools’ Board of Education approved going all-virtual for the first nine weeks of the semester.

Today, they’re meeting for a discussion on what’s next for students.

Many parents are planning on being there. Their goal? Reopening schools for in-person learning as soon as possible.

Parents like Mary Grace Lyon and April Coleman are commending Tuscaloosa City Schools educators who are navigating the unchartered waters of virtual learning. However, they said their children are having difficulties adjusting to this new normal and are facing all kinds of challenges.

“We are not necessarily advocating for in person for all families,” Lyon said. “We understand that there are special circumstances and different levels of fear with the coronavirus that would make people choose a virtual option for their kids. We just want to be afforded the same opportunity to choose the face to face in person path because we feel like that’s how they’ll be the most successful.”

Coleman said her children are struggling with anxiety.

“I know for my own girls, who have always loved school, they are having trouble right now,” Coleman said. “They don’t feel like it’s real school. They don’t feel like they want to be there.”

A group of more than 400 parents and guardians have come together in a Facebook group called Tuscaloosa for Education. They want the option to make their own decisions on what’s best for their children.
