Hinton, WV. (WVVA) - On Saturday the community of Hinton came together to help raise money for a resident in need.
Fire Fighters and Police Officers across Summers County took to the streets to host a boots and buckets fundraiser for DJ Pettry, who is in need of a double lung transplant.
Before he can have the procedure, his family needed the money to cover the expensive cost of relocating to North Carolina for therapy.
The Hope for Hinton Foundation organized the drive.
Laura Lilly, the Executive Director of the foundation said she was not surprised by the community's support.
"Summers County is a phenomenal place where everyone comes together anyway, but this is the first event that I've been involved with where so many people have come together," said Lilly. "I just sent out a group message on Facebook and everyone was willing to help [people asked] 'how many people do you need', 'what time do you need us there', 'what can we do'. So it's been a great experience so far and I'm very proud to live here."
Lilly said with the community's help, they were able to raise the funds needed for Pettry to start the process and relocate to North Carolina for therapy.
