“Reaganland: America’s Right Turn 1976-1980” by Rick Perlstein is another choice partially predicated on a previous read, Perlstein’s own “Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America.” In “Reaganland,” I’m hoping to finish the story started in Perlstein’s earlier histories about the narrative of politics and change. Born in 1970, it feels like I’ve been living in Reagan’s America for my entire life, with even democratic politicians trying to govern in a world bounded by Reagan’s vision. Perlstein, who lives in Chicago, is a great read for both the history and the narrative.
