Upon reopening, bowlers need to treat restrictions responsibly - Times Union

Five long months without bowling, even if much of it was during what is normally a slow time for centers, will make anyone a little antsy.

Congratulations, bowlers. You've got your sport back, even if the restrictions can be a bit limiting and confusing.

No one wants to don a mask while competing, but that's life in the COVID-19 era. Social distancing won't be easy in a sport built on interaction between participants, but those are the restrictions we must abide by until we get rid of this awful pandemic.

"We have to prove that we're going to do it right so we can open, and maybe he'll loosen up the restrictions a little bit," said Towne Academy proprietor Marty Capullo, referring to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. "Otherwise you're going to have bowling centers across the whole state locking their doors."

As bowling enjoyed its reopening Monday, we found that most are waiting until their ducks (and duckpins) are in a row before letting folks in. Here is a rundown of Capital Region centers from which we received information (numbers in parentheses are number of lanes at that particular house):

Arterial Lanes (16), Gloversville: Will open on Friday.

Barbecue Recreation (10), Hoosick Falls: Closed likely for another week or two, seeking further guidance.

Boulevard Bowl (40), Schenectady: Closed. No information available.

Broadway Lanes (24), Fort Edward: Opened at noon Monday. League officers' meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Hi-Way Recreation (12), Wynantskill: Closed.

Hometown Lanes (18), Mechanicville: Closed because of road construction, hoping to open Wednesday.

Iroquois Lanes (8), Canajoharie: Opened Monday with restricted hours (9:30-11:30 a.m.; 8-10 p.m.).

Kelly's Imperial Lanes (24), Amsterdam: Taking a week to organize; plans to open at noon next Monday.

Kingpin's Alley (42), South Glens Falls: Opened at noon Monday.

Spare Time-Latham (32): Plans to open Friday; meeting of league officers set for 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Sportsman's Bowl (28), Schenectady: Closed for now, hoping to open by next Monday.

Starlight Lanes (8), Gloversville: Closed, looking at Thursday or Friday.

Town 'n Country (24), Guilderland: Plans to open at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Installing partitions to allow for leagues.

Local scene

With the reopening of the state's bowling centers, Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York director Jim Burton declared that his opening tournament will be at Sportsman's, which had its spring event canceled because of the pandemic. No date has been set, and the parameters for safe bowling have yet to be established. ... Rotterdam's Liz Kuhlkin has been selected to the Bowlers Journal All-American team for the second straight year. The June 16, 2019-June 15, 2020 window left limited tournaments for the selections, but Kuhlkin's fourth-place finish in the U.S. Women's Open landed her the fifth and final spot over Liz Johnson.

After an eight-month hiatus, the PBA East Region tour resumed in Baltimore, where Rich Strath of Schenectady finished 29th at the Perry Hall Open in Baltimore, grabbing a super senior check for $250. .. The New England Bowlers Association also resumed this weekend with a tournament at Nutmeg Bowl in Fairfield, Conn. Matt Fazzone of Rotterdam made it to the final 16 in the eliminator format.
