While the news is dominated by the challenge of opening schools, this episode of What’s Ahead focuses on an even more fundamental question: Why should any kid in America be forced to go to a terrible school?
Because of their zip code, millions of children—especially in our inner cities—must attend subpar schools unless their parents, most of whom have low incomes, can scrape up enough cash to pay tuition at an alternative institution. No wonder so many students who “graduate” are barely able to read and write, thereby leaving them at a terrible disadvantage.
The answer is school choice, whereby parents are given the means to choose better schools for their kids. Alternatives range from charter schools to private ones geared to struggling families. But the Covid-19 crisis is putting many of these special private schools under severe financial stress.
