Seeking election to the District 5 seat on the Vacaville City Council, a California National Guard officer sees “my community is in need — economically, socially, and politically” — and has set among his goals “to help build stronger community services” for underserved and at-risk populations.

WHO: Jason Roberts, 37, a lieutenant in the California National Guard, with 13 years in service, some of it as an enlisted man.

PERSONAL: Unmarried, a native of Vallejo but raised in Fairfield until age 21, afterward joining the active-duty Army, living in Arizona, Monterey, and North Carolina. Has lived in District 5 since December 2009.

OCCUPATION: “I teach disaster damage assessments, disaster core operations (proper wear of PPE and operation within a disaster environment), and leadership development, from team-leading to personal growth and self-development.”

EDUCATION: Graduate of Fairfield High, class of 2001; associate’s degree in computer science, Heald College, 2003; Defense Language Institute, studying French, 2005; bachelor of science degree in exercise biology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology, University of California, Davis, 2014; pursuing a master’s degree in public leadership at the University of San Francisco; Joint Air Space Operations Command and Control, 2019; Clay Hunt Fellowship Program, 2020. Certificates: FEMA ICS 300 and 400, and O305 All Hazards Incident Management Team.

WHY ARE YOU SEEKING ELECTION?: “I am running for City Council because my community is in need — economically, socially, and politically. I feel that my leadership experience, through the military and community recovery experience from emergency management/disaster response, will help guide the city through a data-driven recovery and future. Recently, issues concerning our city’s democratic process have been questioned, which reinforced my decision to run. Now more than ever we need proven leaders to be independent thinkers and voices for the community.”

GOALS, IF ELECTED: “1) To help build stronger community services within the city, aiding underserved and at-risk communities; 2) To bridge the gap between the school district, schools, and the community especially during the Covid-19 and mandated virtual public schooling which is putting a huge strain on the working families in Vacaville; 3) Strengthen and enable local business to recover and thrive from this shutdown; 4) With record layoffs and unemployment, the local workforce needs to be rebuilt, setting up programs and working with the local businesses to create job opportunities will be key for recovery; 5) Work with the Parks and Recreation Department to help build a city with amenities that will attract people to move to and visit Vacaville — parks, sports fields, updated and safe running/cycling paths, and promoting greenspace and outdoor activities.”

PHILOSOPHY OF GOVERNANCE: “My philosophy involves creating clear, two-way communication with the community, instilling accountability within the local government, building strong community relationships, cultivating equality for all, and improving safety for everyone. I have an open-door policy in the military that I would bring to the city, as everyone deserves to be heard and elected officials have a responsibility to make time for their constituents, not just special interests. People matter and need to be prioritized. What’s the point of building a city if it is at the expense of its residents and their quality of life?”

AWARDS: Combat Action Badge (two tours in Afghanistan)

ENDORSEMENTS: Former Vacaville Mayor Len Augustine and Councilman Nolan Sullivan
