Washington feeling 'more explosive': James Washington spent his offseason, and quarantine time, at his new 26-acre farm in Merkel, Texas. It was the perfect way for him to achieve social distancing, but even more important, it was a way for him to get in shape for the 2020 season.

In addition to caring for the farm and doing all of the daily chores there, Washington also did football activity, including running sprints, running routes, catching balls from a Jugs machine, and lifting, even if that lifting involved tree logs rather than free weights.

It paid dividends for him, dropping from 213 at the end of the 2019 season to around 207-208 now and he is feeling better than ever.

"I feel a lot lighter out there running around," said Washington. "I feel more explosive coming off the ball. Just being able to jump is night and day different. I feel like an all-around new person. When you shed some weight like that and lean down a little bit more, it's all paying off."

It's that jumping ability that is a strength for Washington, who even at 5-11 can go up after a ball, something his love of basketball helped him develop.

"I would say growing up I was more of a basketball player. I didn't have the best handles, but I developed them over the years," said Washington. "I played low post. I was always jumping and getting rebounds. I guess it went hand-in-hand."

Heading into his third season Washington is looking to continue growing and developing his game and be a key factor for Ben Roethlisberger, who he loves having back on the field. He said they have connected during camp and he just wants to continue to work on that, especially with how strong Roethlisberger has come back from his elbow injury.

"I figured with the surgery he would come back a brand new person and it's definitely showing," said Washington. "He is throwing the ball great and doing everything great. The other day, during the scrimmage, it was nice to see No. 7 back in a game jersey and his pads and stuff. Last year I enjoyed everything, but it was different not having him there. It was good to see him back out there.

"All I can do is go out and try to get better each and every day with the offense. Get on the same page with No. 7 and earn his trust. The rest will take care of itself."
