Bay and Northeastern Conferences Want To Play In the Fall

NORTHEAST, WI- Athletic Directors in the Bay Conference will meet on Thursday to discuss fall sports. Northeastern Conference AD’s had a meeting earlier in the week. While no decision has officially been made, Conference Commissioner of both conferences Mark Zahn told tchdailynews.com that a majority of the teams are wanting to play in the fall and some are still on the fence.

He says the schools and the conferences have a lot to consider yet, but at this point, it does not seem like either conference would be ready to fold up completely for the fall.

Both conferences have started practices for lesser contact sports, golf, swimming, cross-country, and tennis, and the Bay Conference will have their first Conference golf meet on Thursday.

“The season is already underway for many of our teams,” Zahn said.

Football, Volleyball, and Soccer all will start practice the week of September 7th.

“We have met multiple times and we have updated each other at each meeting and those updates have not changed.  We have not taken a formal vote. I would say about half of the schools are determined to play in the fall and I don’t that will change even if the conference decides not to play.”

In the Bay Conference, New London and Waupaca are both in Waupaca County, a county that has seen some rising numbers in COVID-19 cases. Clintonville is also in Waupaca County and play many of their sports (except football) in the Northeastern Conference. It is not known if the COVID-19 situation in Waupaca County will play a factor in the decision to play sports countywide.

In addition, the FRCC recently announced that they will be moving their fall sports to the spring. However, West De Pere and Menasha, both FRCC teams for football only, have stated their intent to keep playing football in the fall since their school’s other fall sports in the Bay are going on as scheduled.

“In the past, anytime a Bay Conference member needs something, we have made every attempt to help them out and I don’t see this being any different now, I just don’t know what that help would look like.”

He said it could involve being a hybrid with the Bay and Northeastern Conference, maybe a game or two or a crossover game to help the Phantoms and Bluejays, have to be determined yet. He said if there was a case where a school would opt out on their own, having those two teams may help with scheduling purposes.

One example of that could be Waupaca. The school board is scheduled to discuss whether they want to continue with fall sports or move it to the spring. Zahn said because of that, none of the sports that were eligible to practice this week have been doing so in Waupaca.

Shawano Activities Director Joel Wondra told tchdailynews that feedback that he has gotten from his coaches was mixed but most wanted to keep fall season in the fall instead of moving it to early spring.

“The feedback that I have gotten from other Bay Conference schools is also mixed but more wish to keep the fall season in the fall instead of moving it.” He says in the Bay, at least one other school has indicated that if they go to virtual learning at any point this fall, sports would stop at their school.

So far, FRCC has postponed while Kimberly, Green Bay Schools, and Appleton Schools also postponed among the decisions made it Northeastern Wisconsin.

Wondra says having unity will be important for scheduling.

“It’s not as simple as determining what we do. We have to take into consideration what other schools are doing to make sure that we have potential opponents in whatever season format we opt for.

TCHDailyNews.com will look to update this story after the Conference meetings on Thursday.
