SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) -
Whether students are learning at home or in the classroom this fall, one Texoma mother wants to make sure they have everything they need.
“I am trying to get enough things to help families that were effected by COVID,” said Red River Outreach Co-Founder, Candice Cook. “We do masks and we do other things that families are in need of like clothes, diapers, if you need food if you need really anything.”
Cook helped launch the program at the beginning of the pandemic and now she is holding a school supply drive for families and parents that lost their jobs because of the Coronavirus.
Everything the organization provides to the children comes from donations and if that’s not enough Cook said both she and the organization’s other co-founder Larisa Boston “will literally take that out of our own pockets to help.”
Cook has been gathering supplies from lists provided by local schools in the region, as well as supplies for parents homeschooling their kids in the fall.
“I also bought supplies to help younger children learn some things as well so even if they were going into kindergarten or pre-k there’s supplies in there,” Cook said. “I also bought some learning supplies for the kids that weren’t going to school so that way their parents at home could have some fun games with them and also they didn’t feel left out when their siblings were getting supplies too.”
Cook said it “fills (her) heart and soul” to help people in need.
“It is bigger than having money,” Cook said. “Having somebody let you know that you have helped them in ways that nobody else ever could fills your heart and soul.”
Each student gets a supply pack based on a list of approved materials for each grade.
Anyone interested in donating money or supplies can contact Cook on Facebook or search “Red River Outreach” and contribute to their Facebook fundraiser.
Cook said of all the supplies the group is most in need of backpacks.
