CENTER VALLEY, PA - A degree in cyber security is being offered for the first time at Penn State Lehigh Valley this fall.
"We’re doing it as a consortium with a group of about seven other campuses here across the state of Pennsylvania," explains Information Sciences and Technology Program Coordinator, Kermit Burley, "We are going to be launching the program in the fall of 2020."
The new bachelor of science degree in cybersecurity analytics and operations comes to the local campus as companies seek to hire more cybersecurity professionals.
"The number one thing they talk about is cyber security and what can we do to bring that in and under control," explains Burley, "We need more people that have that ability to analyze a threat, figure out where the threat is coming from and prevent that threat and that’s where we go with our program too; not only taking a look at the numbers but also what can we do to make sure those threats do not exist."
Recent data from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center shows that ransomware, phishing and malware reports increased nearly 400% since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic; with as many as four thousand incidents per day. As more employees telework during the ongoing health crisis, businesses are making cybersecurity a priority.
"What we’re trying to do now is stay ahead of the curve because the demand is there," Burley tells PBS39 News Tonight Reporter K.C. Lopez, "Especially in this pandemic environment, there’s a huge need for people to keep the bad guys out and what they’re doing is things like phishing and ransomware is on the increase and things of other nefarious nature where people are trying to get a hold of your computer and do nefarious things; I think is the best way to put it."
The pandemic has led to the highest unemployment rates since the Great Depression and PSU-LV sees the degree as an opportunity for stable employment in an industry generally safe from current workforce struggles.
