This Director Pitched a Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) 'Star Wars' Series to Disney+ - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

#RoseTicoDeservedBetter started trending on December 26, the day after Christmas and nearly a week after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Fans of Kelly Marie Tran’s character from The Last Jedi were disappointed by Rose Tico’s brief screen time in the latest film. Even though Tran herself said publicly that she was happy with her role in the ensemble, especially her scenes incorporated into footage of Carrie Fisher, fans wanted to see more of Rose.

Could Kelly Marie Tran play Rose Tico on Disney+?

It took until 9PM but one Rose Tico fan who may be in a position to do something about it weighed in. A big time Hollywood director pitched Disney+ a Rose Tico streaming series. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now playing in theaters.

The director of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ wants to make a Rose Tico series with Kelly Marie Tran

Jon M.Chu tweeted, “Ok @disneyplus. Put me in coach. Let’s make this series happen.  #RoseTicoDeservedBetter @starwars.” That shows not only does he agree with fans, but he has ideas for more stories to tell with Kelly Marie Tran.

Chu is busy with his big movie career, but it sounds like he would make time to create a series for Kelly Marie Tran’s Star Wars character. He would only really have to direct the first episode and set it up for other directors to carry on, like John Favreau did for The Mandalorian. Actually, Favreau wrote it and Dave Filoni directed so there’s all sorts of ways for Chu to fit it in.

John M. Chu has credentials for telling diverse stories

Crazy Rich Asians was a landmark film: a Hollywood studio movie featuring all Asian leads, that became a blockbuster success. Chu is working on two sequels, but first he directed In the Heights, featuring a cast of Latinx actors like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Stephanie Beatriz, Anthony Ramos, Jimmy Smits, Dascha Polanco, Melissa Barrera, Marc Anthony, Daphne Rubin-Vega and more.

Chu’s earlier films are diverse too. His Step Up sequels, Setup Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D feature dancers from all backgrounds. If anyone knows the value of carrying on Rose Tico’s story, it would be John M. Chu.

John M. Chu could direct ‘Star Wars’ action too

John M. Chu has a lot of experience with ensemble dramas and musicals. He also directed two Justin Bieber documentaries and the Jem and the Holograms movie. Chu has blockbuster experience too

He did big action with G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Explosions and lasers would be part and parcel to any Rose Tico story, but whose to say his Disney+ serious couldn’t be a drama about her relationships planetside. Nah, probably not. Chu also played with visual effects in the magic sequel Now You See Me 2

Will Disney+ accept Rose Tico pitches from Twitter?

Disney has to be paying attention to the fan reaction to sidelining Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. They’ll have to make formal deals offline, but this is a vocal group of subscribers. Chu has some support from tweeps too. West Side Story actor Rahel Zegler is behind Chu:

So is Good Trouble star Sherry Cola:

Writer Michael Schick is also willing to throw support behind a Kelly Marie Tran Disney+ series:

Many other tweeps replied to Chu with support, including one who even suggested going for a film series. Either way, dozens replied and hundreds retweeted Chu’s pitch so maybe he’ll use his influence to make this happen.
