‘The Masked Singer’ spoiler: The Tree is … - Gold Derby

We’ve reached the quarter-final stage of “The Masked Singer” with just six of the 12 stars still in the competition. Of these half dozen, who all sang on December 10, we are absolutely certain about the identity of one: the Tree. After watching all of her performances plus the clue videos, we are now even more convinced that we know the name of the famous face hidden behind that elaborate mask.

The Tree was the hit of week 1 with her cover of “High Hopes” by the Panic! at the Disco. We didn’t see her again until week 5 but the wait was worth it as she rocked the house with her version of  the Aretha Franklin classic “Think.” Two weeks later, she changed it up with her rendition of the Meghan Trainor hit “No Excuses.”

In week 8, she secured her place in the quarterfinal with her over-the-top take on “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler. By doing so, she avoided a sing-off that would have left her fate in the hands of the four judges (Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke).

We’ve been doing more digging and and are now certain that we know the name of the celebrity who has branched out to become a Tree. Keep reading for the sixth of this week’s “The Masked Singer” spoilers.

The Tree is comedienne Ana Gasteyer, who came to fame on “Saturday Night Live.” Don’t think so?  Well consider the following.

Gasteyer just released a holiday album, “Sugar and Booze,” which would tie in well to her appearance here dressed as a Christmas tree.

The Tree says she she wants to “jazz up” her career. Five years ago, Gasteyer recorded an acclaimed jazz album, “I’m Hip.”

The clues video includes a photo of a  locker with the number 30. “Saturday Night Live” originates at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.  That long-time home to NBC would also account for the black-and-white TV seen in the video.

The video is full of references to baking. One of Gasteyer’s most famous characters on “SNL” was Margaret Jo McCullin, host of the NPR radio show “The Delicious Dish.

As a group, the 16 “The Masked Singer” contestants can boast of being on Broadway 22 times. Gasteyer can claim four of those credits with star turns in “The Rocky Horror Show,” “The Royal Family,” “The Threepenny Opera” and “Wicked.”

We won’t find out if our theory is correct until the Tree is unmasked. That will be either when the Tree is eliminated or wins season 2. Who do you think is hiding inside the Tree costume?
