Patsy Cline was a legendary singer, whose songs like “I Fall to Pieces” and “Crazy” inspired generations of artists that came after her. But the late country icon was perhaps happiest when she was at home with her husband, Charlie Dick, and their two kids, Julie and Randy.
“She was very much a hands-on mom,” Julie, now 61, tells CountryLiving.com. “She wanted to be there, and even though she loved her work, it was also something that had to be done. It was a way for her to help support the family. She really would rather have been at home, I believe.”
Patsy’s attempts to balance the stage and her family before her tragic death at age 30 is a polarizing theme in the October 19 Lifetime biopic, Patsy and Loretta, on which Julie is a producer. In addition to highlighting the deep friendship between Patsy and Loretta Lynn, Julie also incorporated memories from her childhood to better paint a picture of Patsy as a mother.
For one, some filming took place in the actual house where they lived during the last year of Patsy’s life. Scenes showing “how hard it was when she would have to leave” are also in line with how Julie reacted to Patsy going on the road. While some are more heart-wrenching than others, any sadness is just a small portion of Julie’s overall happy times with Patsy.
“There are always emotional moments when we deal with Mom and her legacy and her music and telling her story,” she says. “But at the same time we really like sharing, it keeps her alive, it keeps her vivid.”
There were also a few of Julie’s fondest recollections of her mom that weren’t included in Patsy and Loretta, one of which illustrates how Patsy was a trailblazer even then.
“When I was little, my mother and I would color and she had her own coloring book and I was not allowed to color in her coloring book,” Julie recalls. “She had her own crayons and coloring book before it was, you know, cool, to do that as a grownup.”
It’s those treasured times that give Julie the strength to move past her loss, and honor Patsy with projects like Patsy and Loretta.
“With all the years that have passed, you kind of grow accustomed to talking about things, and it’s also been a pleasure to have her remembered,” she says. “[Patsy and Loretta] is just such a happy program that I really didn’t feel a lot of sadness. I actually felt kind of warm and comfortable.”
